Take Joy
Psalm 30:5: “For His anger endureth but a moment, and in His favor is life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning”
My prayer is that your heart be fixed on Joy this week.
What is Joy?
In order to answer this question, it is important to first define happiness and then distinguish the difference.
In the un woke version of Webster's Dictionary (1828) happiness is defined as a "the state of being in which a person's desires are fulfilled and they experience pleasure without pain. The word happiness comes from the Old Norse word happ, which means "luck" or "chance". It is also related to the Old English word hæpic, which means "equal".
As seen in this definition, happiness is a fleeting feeling that is only experienced when there is no pain, resistance, or adversity, calamity, or chaos.
Joy on the other hand, is referred to in the Bible as a fruit of the spirit. It is a gift from God.
Joy is a state of being that can be present regardless of the adversities we face in life. It is an enduring attitude of the heart and spirit that provides comfort in calamity, contentment in chaos, and peace in prolonged periods of pain.
The big question is this:
How do I attain Joy that provides the comfort, contentment, and peace I need and desire?
Even though the will to act on it is not easy, the answer is actually quite simple. Here are three (though not a complete list) actions you can take today to bring some joy into your life:
1. Spend 15 minutes with God each day.
1. Speak with Him. Be honest and raw. Do not hold back. Trust me, God can handle whatever it is you need to let out.
2. Read scripture - you do not have to read for hours on end. Simply start with a few verses each day. I personally listen to or read one chapter each day.
3. Pause three times throughout each day to express your gratitude to God for three things you've been blessed with.
2. Put energy into finding a way or ways to bless/encourage at least one person each day. Acts of kindness tend to help us focus on the needs/pains of others. This takes us from a self focus where we tend to wallow in our own misery and it helps us see that we are not alone in our struggles of life.
3. Create a list of memories that put a smile on your face. Think of the details of these memories and let them be an achievement point for you as you rewire your mind to default joy mode.
